Hyper Diaper Drive

At The Tot Shop in Valparaiso, the requests for kids’ diapers are never ending.

The Hyper Diaper Drive runs from April 3-11 and its primary goal is to collect a total of 311 boxes or packages of diapers. This amount represents a year’s supply of diapers for The Family & Youth Services Bureau (FYSB) Tot Shop Program, and will ensure that there will be enough for the program’s clients and their children. FYSB also asks community members for items that accompany the diaper experience, such as pull-ups, unscented wipes, Desitin, diaper bags, and diaper genies.

Individuals, organizations, churches, and offices are invited to participate by gathering diapers and these other new items for donation. Once the items are gathered, someone from FYSB can pick them up, or they can be brought to one of the drop-off locations listed below.

The Tot Shop is an incentive-based program where young parents can shop for needed baby and toddler supplies.  However, the items are not given away and they can’t be purchased with money.

Parents must earn coupons by going to doctor visits and checkups for their kids, getting immunizations, attending parenting classes and nutrition workshops – doing educational things that help them to become better parents. They receive coupons after attending these activities, and exchange their coupons for needed supplies like diapers, clothing, beds, and books.

More than 2,000 people participate in The Tot Shop Program each year. The Tot Shop storefront is located at 257 W. Lincolnway in Valparaiso. The Mobile Tot Shop also travels each month to Portage, LaPorte, Knox, Winamac, Morocco and Rennselaer to accommodate parents who cannot always travel to Valparaiso.

The 2015 Hyper Diaper Drive is sponsored by Horizon Bank and community members can drop off new packages of diapers and related items to any of the Horizon Bank locations in Chesterton, Portage and Valparaiso. Other drop off locations include: Doelling Decorating Center, Brown Tire, Indiana Furniture, Flanagin’s Bulk Mail Service in Valparaiso, Tate’s Restaurant in Portage, Absolutely Dry in Chesterton, Patz’s Market in Hebron, and the Family & Youth Services Bureau offices in Valparaiso and Portage.

The Tot Shop is one of 20 programs and services offered to the community by The Family & Youth Services Bureau, serving more than 4,000 youth and families each year.  For more information about Hyper Diaper Drive, The Tot Shop, or the Family & Youth Services Bureau, contact Jackie Gray at 219-464-9585 or by email at jgray@fysb.org.
