Nurses by day and students by night, the staff of the Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Community Hospital have spent countless hours preparing for the Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse (CRRN) exam. Their hard work has finally paid off and all six team members – Chad Jones, RN; Christine Sencaj, RN; Jennifer Mutka, RN; JoAnna Klocek, RN; Katherine Kasper, RN and Lila Dunham, RN – received passing scores, earning CRRN credentials for the rehabilitation specialty.

The CRRN title validates that these nurses have specialized knowledge in all aspects of rehabilitation care for patients living with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses. This knowledge comes with many benefits – patients are further comforted knowing they are receiving highly specialized care and employers value the superior quality of nursing provided by certified employees.

Acute Rehabilitation Unit Nurse Manager Lila Dunham, RN, CRRN, and her staff enrolled in the Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse review course by Rehab Class Works. The class consisted of extensive web-based education, workbook assignments, periodic testing and two 8-hour classes with on-site training. The comprehensive exam took three hours to complete.

“Many hours of studying, presentation and homework was required to pass this course which everyone accomplished,” said Dunham. “I am so proud of all of them for their hard work and commitment.”

The six month course – accredited by the American Credentialing Center on Accreditation – ran from July through December 2014, and required much individual study while staff continued to work their regularly-scheduled shifts.

Professionals of the Acute Rehabilitation Center at Community Hospital in Munster are committed to providing a top-quality, individualized experience throughout the recovery process. The Acute Rehabilitation staff advocates a positive approach to care by creating a supportive, therapeutic environment in which patients can heal, optimizing recovery times and enhancing their qualities of life. Registered nurses and patient care staff work together to ensure patients regain maximum physical and mental functioning before returning them back to their daily routines.

Dunham plans to facilitate future CRRN classes for her staff with hopes to eventually have a fully-certified nursing unit.

The Acute Rehabilitation Unit celebrated the achievements of these dedicated nurses with an awards ceremony and a commemorative plaque.
