With the kids on break from school and an abundance of sunshine, July is the perfect month to get out and do something fun. Here are a few of my suggestions for exciting places to eat, shop and have a great time.

A restaurant to try this month

While the menu at Third Coast Spice Café draws inspiration from around the globe, its ingredients are usually locally sourced. Organic coffee will start your morning off right and a delicious omelet will keep you going all day long. Open daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., Third Coast Spice Café also serves a wide variety of sandwiches, plus much more. For more information call 219-926-5858 or visit www.thirdcoastspice.com.

Can’t miss event

The Perseid Stargaze and Snoring on the Sand is an annual shooting star event held at Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton, 1600 North 25 East. Marking the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower, this is the only night of the year that you can stargaze and sleep on the beach. The event will take place on August 8, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Standard park entrance fees apply, $7 for Indiana residents and $12 for nonresidents.  Call 219-926-1390 or visit www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2980.htm for more information.

Check out this store

Anytime I need a unique gift, I always make sure to visit Lifestyles. Located in downtown Valparaiso at 122 E. Lincolnway, this 10,000-square-foot shop is stocked with an eclectic mix of glassware, jewelry, kids’ toys, kitchenware, gourmet foods, garden items, greeting cards, frames, candles and collectibles. Lifestyles also offers a great selection of furniture, lamps and artwork. If you’re anything like me, plan to spend a good deal of time perusing this shop’s fun offerings. For more information, call 219-464-9167 or, visit www.valpolifestyles.com.

Take a day trip

Throughout the hot summer months, I prefer to stay as close as possible to the beaches of Indiana Dunes Country. However, an occasional day trip can provide a nice change of pace. This July, why not hop on the South Shore for a relaxing, hour-long ride into Chicago? Once you get there, make sure to check out all the city has to offer. Professional sporting events, world-class museums and Navy Pier are just some of the attractions you can enjoy. The Chicago Visitor’s Bureau can provide you with more information. For more information, visit www.choosechicago.com. For a train schedule, visit .

Experience the Beyond the Beach Trail

Three million people a year visit the Indiana Dunes, but the staff here at Indiana Dunes Tourism put together a list of 60 great natural, cultural and historical sites to check out “Beyond the Beach.”

This month, visit Ogden Botanical Gardens, a Valparaiso park that sets the bar for horticulture within the city. Open daily from dawn to 10 p.m., this park is located at 451 Harrison Blvd. A network of brick pathways traverses annuals, perennials, roses, shrubs, trees, streams and even a koi pond.  Such diverse plant life makes Ogden Botanical Gardens a haven for butterflies, hummingbirds and songbirds.

With four acres of manicured gardens, this park is the perfect setting for everything from taking a stroll to snapping family portraits.  To learn more about Ogden Botanical Gardens and other fun places to visit, visit www.indianadunes.com or call 219-926-2255 to request Indiana Dunes Tourism’s Activities Guide, which is a complete guide to Porter County
