November is American Diabetes Month and it is an important element in Fagen Pharmacy’s effort to focus our community’s attention on the issues surrounding diabetes and the many people who are impacted by the disease.

When a patient is diagnosed with diabetes (or even pre-diabetes), it’s not just about the medication that you are prescribed that helps manage the disease. Simple lifestyle changes are ideal in taking the holistic approaching to beginning a healthy lifestyle with diabetes. Most patients find it beneficial if they have a team of diabetes experts that help guide them through this new lifestyle.

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability and death in the United States. Based on current statistics, approximately 50% of the American population is living with diabetes or pre-diabetes. This condition can cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease, and other health problems if it’s not controlled.

The good news? People who are at high risk for type 2 diabetes can lower their risk by more than half if they make small healthy changes in their lifestyle. These changes include adhering to medication regimens, eating healthy, increasing physical activity, and losing weight.

Fagen Pharmacy has a unique program where a series of classes are followed by monthly one-on-one individual appointments during which our pharmacists will have the opportunity to work more closely with you to address specific questions, concerns, and barriers to optimal diabetes management. Our program is highly focused on patient outcomes, especially in lowering HgbA1C and in maintaining patient adherence.

This exciting program is covered in full by Medicare with a supplement, Medicaid, and many private insurance companies upon receipt of a physician referral. We offer a day and evening course every month so whenever you are ready to join us, Fagen Pharmacy will always be here.

An example of the topics to be covered is as follows:

Class 1: Introduction to diabetes and the medications that help manage it

Class 2: Meal Planning

Class 3: Nutrition and Exercise

Class 4: Long-term Complications

We will be hosting a FREE information session at 3pm this Friday at our new Valparaiso Fagen Pharmacy location at 3400 N Calumet Ave. In this information session we will provide useful information about diabetes management. Come join us and learn the ABC’s of Diabetes.

For more information about classes and registration, send your inquiries to diabetes@fagenpharmacy.com or call Fagen Pharmacy at 219-462-4381.
