Taltree Arboretum & Gardens Recognizes Dorothy Ailes for her Contributions in 2015

Taltree Arboretum & Gardens has had active volunteers helping with conservation and education efforts since the year 2000. Since then, the volunteers have accomplished more than anyone could have imagined! It has been the dedication and commitment of loyal volunteers, like Dorothy Ailes, that has made all the difference.

The staff at Taltree would like to take a moment to formally thank Dorothy for the time and effort she has contributed toward Taltree’s mission and vision over the 2015 season.

Dorothy serves as a Taltree Railway Garden Docent. This means she is specially educated and trained in the history of the Railway and its importance for our region. As a docent, Dorothy leads educational tours of the Railway Garden and explains to guests each historical vignette displayed there.

“Dorothy is a valuable docent for the Railway Garden,” says Dave Simkowski, the Railway Garden Master. “She has so much knowledge about the historical events that are significant to the railways and is involved in many different programs at Taltree. The best thing about having Dorothy on our volunteer team is that she is an outstanding leader and can organize a group of volunteers to get involved and accomplish a project together.”

While not leading tours, Dorothy is still extremely hands-on in the Railway Garden. She spends much of her time working on the figurines that make the vignettes come to life. Her attention to detail makes all the difference when it comes to the historical events that are displayed on the Railway Garden’s timeline. Additionally, a number of the structures and buildings that make up the vignettes have been graciously donated by Dorothy.

On top of all the wonderful things Dorothy has done for the Railway Garden, she is a tremendous help with Taltree’s special events. Dorothy loves the children that visit Taltree and enjoys being involved with them. She is fantastic at planning out crafts and activities for kids to do at the events. For example, Dorothy was involved with the craft tables at both the GLOW Art After Dark and Fall Fest, even traveling to Michigan to pick up the pumpkins we had for children to decorate!

“We are so grateful to have a volunteer like Dorothy at Taltree,” states the Volunteer Coordinator, Ahna Dunn. “She brings life and passion into her work here and, through her actions, countless people have been touched. Dorothy is committed to the success of Taltree and that enthusiasm overflows on to the people who work and volunteer around her.”
