When anger escalates, taking the time to count to ten can help reduce tensions and give young people the chance to refocus on fixing the situation. But too often, children and teens lack the skills to properly resolve conflict.

That’s why the Indiana Youth Institute (IYI) is teaming up with Dunebrook to help equip youth workers, teachers, parents and other caring adults with the skills they need to teach children peaceful conflict resolution.

Ellen Kyes is the director of the Take Ten program at the Robinson Early Learning Center. The program focuses on reducing and preventing violence by teaching children positive alternatives. One of those methods is learning how to “talk it out, walk it out and wait it out.” Attendees will learn ways to teach the children with whom they work to take ten deep breaths instead of saying something hurtful; taking ten steps back instead of getting into a fight and taking ten seconds to calm down instead of potentially turning to a weapon to resolve the issue.

The forum will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at Dunebrook, 502 Wall Street, Valparaiso.

As part of IYI’s Youth Worker Café program, the seminar and lunch are free, but reservations are required.
