The Indiana State Library is encouraging fourth graders to celebrate Indiana’s bicentennial by creating birthday cards. Students are given the opportunity to draw their favorite people, places or things in Indiana on the front of the card – which resembles the outline of our great state – and answer a few questions on the back of the card about what they like best about Indiana. The project started on Statehood Day (December 11, 2015) and will resume through the end of 2016.

“The cards are printed on special acid-free paper and will be preserved in acid-free boxes for generations to come,” explained Rare Books and Manuscripts Supervisor Bethany Fiechter. “We will then organize the cards by county so students, parents, whoever can come in a hundred years from now and be able to see them fully preserved using these acid-free products.

“The birthday cards will be on display at the Indiana State Library starting this summer,” said Associate Director Connie Bruder. “We estimate receiving 10,000 cards by the end of 2016.”
