For Broadway Café owner George Borovilos, the term “family restaurant” means just that – a friendly place where you can take your family and be served by his family. That family includes the staff, some who have worked for Borovilos for decades.

“This is a ‘family’ restaurant,” Borovilos said. “You get good food, good service. Everything here is fresh. Our staff is considerate and we treat you like one of the family.”

Borovilos started in the restaurant business when he was 14. That was nearly 50 years ago. His father was also a restaurateur, and George at one time owned the Broadway Café in Merrillville and Valparaiso. He sold the Merrillville site and has been in Valparaiso for 20 years.

“I’m here seven days a week, and my family works here,” Borovilos said. “In the next 10 years, there won’t be any family restaurants. The franchises are taking over and can advertise more.”

Broadway Cafe has its daily specials, including soups. On this particular Friday, the soups of the day were chicken lemon rice, a favorite with diners, along with New England clam chowder and Dutch cream of potato. Dinner specials included tilapia, lasagna, macaroni and cheese, ocean perch, and shrimp Creole.

Prices are reasonable, with many entrees under $10. There is also a weekday seniors’ menu for $8.95 for those 60 and older. Senior meals include beer-battered cod, chicken fried steak, catfish fillet, meatloaf, veal cutlet, spaghetti or mostaccioli, or three-piece broasted chicken.

True to his Greek heritage, Borovilos offers a number of ethnic dishes, including lamb, chicken, saganaki, and Greek pork chops.

Regarding the café’s breakfast menu, Borovilos said his omelettes are prepared in a pan, then oven-baked. Sandwiches, very popular with Borovils’ customers, come with soup and dessert.

“Service, atmosphere, and food,” Borovilos described his business’ recipe for success. “We have a lot of people who come for breakfast and then return the same day for dinner.”

Doris Brown, a regular customer for the past two decades, dines several times a week.  ‘This is a very friendly place to eat. The food is good and the price is right,” Brown said. “All the waitresses make sure the customer is satisfied.”

Laci Lindsey, manager of Broadway Café, has been with the eatery for 20 years. “I’ve been here so long, I’ve seen a lot of changes,” Lindsey said, “but the commitment to customers here is the very thing I enjoy, along with working with the other employees. It’s a very close-knit group – close to being family.”

Some staff members have been with Borovilos while he owned the Merrillville restaurant. Wanda Frankovich, a Broadway Café waitress since 1989, said she enjoys her customers and her coworkers, along with the food.

“The quantity of food people get here, they can’t get at any other restaurant,” Frankovich said. “They can’t finish half their food, they get so much. They love it here. I get so many compliments.”

Others have also praised the restaurant. Table Talk Media presented Broadway Café with its Best of the Best Award from a nationwide restaurant survey.

Despite rumors to the contrary, Borovilos and Lindsey stress that Broadway Café is not going out of business.

“Because of rumors, people believe we’re closing. That’s not true,” Lindsey said, noting that the business’ lease is not up until 2019.

“We will relocate,” Borovilos added. “We’re not closing. Broadway Café will always be there.”
