“The Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay is not only the premier event of our state’s Bicentennial Celebration, but it is also an opportunity for Hoosiers from counties large and small to showcase all that makes Indiana unique,” said Mark Newman the Porter County Bicentennial Committee. “The torch route was designed to highlight the state’s cultural fabric, our history and values, and the spirit of Hoosier ingenuity, igniting generations to come.”

In Porter County, the torch will start at Indiana Dunes State Park and go through Valparaiso University, downtown Valparaiso and Central Avenue in Portage. Porter County’s route can be found at http://www.in.gov/ibc/files/PorterCo.pdf .

“We are excited to have the torch come through Porter County from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. CST on Sunday, Oct. 9 and we hope to share it with people at the dunes, and in Valparaiso and Portage,” said Ken Kosky, Porter County coordinator for the Indiana bicentennial.

Porter County received numerous nominations for torchbearers and those are currently being vetted.

Torchbearers will be Hoosiers who demonstrate exceptional public service, excellence in their profession, acts of heroism or volunteer service to their neighborhood, community, region or state. Statewide, over 4,000 torchbearer nominations were received.
