Former Mayor David Butterfield was named “Legendary Friend” at a May 5th reception hosted by the Valpo Parks Foundation. The award recognizes Butterfield’s significant contributions of promoting the Valpo Parks system over its lifetime. His time as Mayor oversaw the city’ development of many park initiatives like the original ValPLAYso, Fairgrounds Park and the first pathway which is the Lakewood Link on Campbell Street north to Lakewood Park.

More than 200 Community leaders and friends helped the Valpo Parks Foundation celebrate volunteerism and leaders giving back to their community at its annual Friends & Legends recognition event on Thursday, May 5 at the William E. Urschel Pavilion.

Special recognition was given to former Valparaiso Mayor David Butterfield as a Legendary Friend, and to Bruce and Judy Leetz, who were recognized with the Parks Foundation’s highest expression of thanks, the Art and Irene Malasto Legends Award.

On behalf of the Parks Foundation, former board member Gus Olympidis presented the Legendary Friend recognition to former Valparaiso Mayor David Butterfield. “Our Mayors without exception have intertwined the success of this community to a thriving and expanding park system,” said Olympidis. He noted that the genesis of the Parks Foundation and two transformational park projects, Fairgrounds Park and the original Valplayso, happened under Butterfield’s watch. “The mayor we’re honoring today (Butterfield) is very much like the mayors before him and the mayor after him.  Every one of them has graced this community with their decency, their integrity and their civility.”

The Leetzes were presented the Art and Irene Malasto Legends Award by Valpo Parks Director John Seibert. The legacy award was named after Judy’s parents who were longtime Parks Foundation volunteers and supporters.  “The entire Leetz family has embraced our vision and inspired others to follow,” said Seibert. “Many have benefited from their generosity and giving back.”  The family has supported the Foundation since its inception in 1988. The Indiana Beverage Center at Central Park Plaza was made possible by the family’s most recent gift.

“This culture of philanthropy is one example of what makes our community so great,” noted Seibert. The Leetz family also supported the initial phase of Central Park Plaza where their family mantra, “To Live, To Love, To Leave a Legacy,” can be found inscribed at the plaza gateway.

“The Friends and Legends reception celebrates all who have helped support the continuing legacy of high quality experiences provided by Valpo Parks,” said Seibert, “Dave, Judy and Bruce embody the spirit of this community and sustaining quality of for Valparaiso. The Valpo Parks Foundation is proud to recognize their lifelong partnership efforts as residents, business owners and statesmen of the community.”

The Valpo Parks Foundation supports the Valpo Parks system of facilities and programs through public and private partnerships. The nonprofit organization provides opportunities for the community to support the continuing legacy of the parks mission.
