Valpo Parks summer day camp opens June 6

The Valpo Parks is ready for summer and registration for its Discovery Day Camps is now open. The first week of summer camp begins June 6. Ten weeks of day camps are available for boys and girls, preschool thru eighth grade. Assistant Camp Director Cydney Young, photographed with 2015 day campers, will be back to help lead the fun.

The Valpo Parks is ready for summer and registration for its Discovery Day Camp is now open. The first week of summer camp, held at the 122-acre Rogers-Lakewood Park, in Valparaiso begins Monday, June 6. Ten weeks of day camps are available for boys and girls, preschool thru eighth grade; campers are divided into age-appropriate groups.

Each week of camp is filled with an always changing variety of activities. Campers will be able to experience field trips, fishing, inflatables, boating, nature hikes, arts and crafts, and a variety of sports and games.

“We design the program activities each week around a different theme,” said Valpo Parks Superintendent of Recreation Phil Blasko. “The combination of creative play, outdoor activities, educational programs, the park setting and our talented camp counselors provide a truly unique day camp experience.”

This year the Valpo Parks is employing 30 teachers and college students as camp staff for the popular program. “Our camp staff is highly qualified and we focus on encouraging socialization and creating the best experience for our campers,” said Blasko.

Interested families and returning campers and are invited to the “Meet the Counselors Open House” on Thursday, June 2, from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at Rogers-Lakewood Park. Discovery Day Camp runs Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., from June 6 to August 12, with before and after camp care offered. Parents have the option of registering children for any number of weeks, but will receive one week free of standard camp upon registration for the entire 10 weeks of day camp.
