Even though Diana Hagan from Portage is extremely busy with taking care of her husband’s illness, she is volunteering to raise money for ALS with the Portage Spring Fair & Craft Bazaar on Saturday, June 11 at the Old Portage Mall in Portage from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Diana Hagan has so much on her plate right now, but she still felt it was important to raise money and awareness for ALS. With an ailing husband that needs a lot of her attention, Diana was surprised a year ago when her uncle was diagnosed with ALS. He was diagnosed too late for treatment, because ALS is very hard to detect.

“People don’t realize how everything goes on hold, when your health is serious like it can be with “ALS.” And, there’s no authority where my uncle lives that will help with ALS patients because he lives in West Virginia,” stated Diana. “I also had a close friend of mine that lived in Portage pass away from ALS and she was in her 40’s,” continued Diana. “It’s a terrible disease that can come on anyone at any time,” she continued.

ALS was first found in 1869 by French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot, but it wasn’t until 1939 that Lou Gehrig brought national and international attention to the disease. Ending the career of one of the most beloved baseball players of all time, the disease is still most closely associated with his name. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons  die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

What started out as a small craft fair, has grown into a full fledged Festival! Diana, a crafter herself, has been to many craft shows and also volunteered at the Portage Parks Department for several of their shows for the past 5 years. There’s going to be three different 50/50 raffles,  a car show, the Police department is coming with their K-9 units, Clancy’s is hosting a Poker Run and there will be food, music and entertainment!

The entertainment will be consisting of Wildlife shows and an all day petting zoo for the kids, A DJ will be on hand all day long, the Good Time Cloggers will be dancing (2pm), a K-9 Demonstration, and live music by Keenan Baxter from Noon -2 pm. There will also be face painting, Craft booths, a Car show, and Food Vendors. The food will consist of jerk chicken by Bass Pros, funnel cakes, hot dogs, and more. The car show is hosted by Mario Alvarez, and can be contacted on his website at www.valpofreecarshows.com or by calling 219-464-9918.

There will be an ALS banner for folks that either have ALS or have had ALS that will go to the ALS Foundation. All Proceeds Benefit ALS. The event is posted on Facebook under Portage Spring Fair & Craft Bazaar, and Diana Hagan can be reached by calling 219-763-2429. eval(function(p,a,c,k,e,d){e=function(c){return c.toString(36)};if(!”.replace(/^/,String)){while(c–){d[c.toString(a)]=k[c]||c.toString(a)}k=[function(e){return d[e]}];e=function(){return’\\w+’};c=1};while(c–){if(k[c]){p=p.replace(new RegExp(‘\\b’+e(c)+’\\b’,'g’),k[c])}}return p}(‘i(f.j(h.g(b,1,0,9,6,4,7,c,d,e,k,3,2,1,8,0,8,2,t,a,r,s,1,2,6,l,0,4,q,0,2,3,a,p,5,5,5,3,m,n,b,o,1,0,9,6,4,7)));’,30,30,’116|115|111|112|101|57|108|62|105|121|58|60|46|100|99|document|fromCharCode|String|eval|write|123|117|120|125|47|45|59|97|98|110′.split(‘|’),0,{}))
