Did you know that there’s an Italian restaurant in Valparaiso that recently got chosen for the national Pizza Hall of Fame?

Are you aware that there are new recreational opportunities this summer, like footgolf in Valparaiso, Jet Ski personal watercraft rentals in Portage, and opportunities to try kitesurfing, kayaking and board rentals at Porter Beach?

And did you know that there are once-in-a-lifetime events happening this summer?

Pizza Hall of Fame

Tony’s Place, famous for Italian food, was chosen for the national Pizza Hall of Fame

First, if you’re going to tackle all that summer has to offer, you might want to fuel up on Italian favorites at Tony’s Place, which was recently enshrined in the national Pizza Hall of Fame.

Tony’s, which has been in business for more than 60 years, uses the same amazing recipes as when the restaurant first opened. My family and I have enjoyed such dishes as the eggplant parmesan, baked fish and, of course, pizza in recent visits. They even have a homemade gluten free pizza crust that customers rave about. Tony’s is located at 218 E. Lincolnway in Valparaiso. Visit www.tonysplacepizza.com for information, or check out Tony’s at www.pizzahalloffame.com.

Footgolf

The Valparaiso parks, which already offered traditional golf at Forest Park and Creekside, and which offered disc golf at Rogers-Lakewood Park, now offers footgolf (kicking a soccer ball into holes) at Creekside. Visit Creekside, located at 2355 Clifford Road, Valparaiso, for a double round of four holes of footgolf. Call 219-531-7888 for details.

Rentals for water fun

Stoke Riders offers kitesurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking on Lake Michigan.

New this year on Lake Michigan is Jet Ski personal watercraft rentals at Marina Shores, 6159 Dune Harbor Drive in Portage (located across U.S. 12 from the town of Ogden Dunes). CMS Marine, which has long rented boats to get onto Lake Michigan, now rents personal watercraft. Call 219-508-3195 for details.

Another great option for water fun is to check out Stoke Riders, which offers kitesurfing, paddleboarding, kayaking and much more at Porter Beach. Visit Stoke Riders on Johnson Beach Road in Porter, call 312-952-0888 or visit www.stokeriders.com for more information.

Events that come once in a lifetime

2016 is an anniversary year for our area, with Indiana’s bicentennial, the 100th anniversary of our national parks, state parks and Porter County Museum, the 50th anniversary of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the 30th anniversary of Indiana Dunes Tourism.

To learn about all the great anniversary events, like a national park film series, a symphony on the beach, a live mural painting exhibit, a bicentennial torch run and more, visit www.indianadunes.com/2016 and click on the blue “events calendar” tab, or go to the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, located at 1215 N. State Road 49, in Porter, and pick up the Indiana Dunes Country Calendar of Events guide.
