DeMotte Chamber hosting Touch of Dutch Festival, parade

The DeMotte Chamber of Commerce hosts the annual Touch of Dutch Festival and parade. It is set to take place on Friday and Saturday, August 12 and 13 at Spencer Park in DeMotte. The theme for this year is “Happy Birthday Indiana” to commemorate the bicentennial of the Hoosier State. Touch of Dutch festivities are officially endorsed by the Indiana Bicentennial Commission.

The festival will begin on Friday, August 12 at Spencer Park at 5 p.m. with a special opening ceremony led by DeMotte Boy Scout Troop 157.

In addition to crafters, artisans, businesses and food vendors, free entertainment lined up for Friday includes ACME Championship Wrestling (a DeMotte Boxing Club event) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. D & M Events will provide a free Pedal Tractor Pull sponsored by Anderson Outdoor Power from 7 to 9 p.m. The Pedal Tractor Pull will be open to all riders from age 4 to adult, and free-will donations to the DeMotte’s Good Neighbor Food Pantry will be accepted.

Live music by Eaten Alive will take place in the band shell from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday. Kid’s entertainment for the evening will include family mini games, pony rides by Lil Wranglers of Hebron and bounce houses by Colby Event Services. Friday events will wrap up at 9 p.m.

On Saturday, the Touch of Dutch parade will take place on Halleck Street (Rte. 231) at 10 a.m. Halleck Street will be closed on Saturday from 9:30 am until noon. Indiana Ballet Theater will entertain parade-goers with Dutch dancing.

Saturday’s Touch of Dutch live entertainment begins at noon at the band shell with Doug and Karen Lins from Hot Sauce.  Remedy will perform from 2:30 to 4:p.m. Up-and-coming Nashville entertainer Erika Raen will be on stage from 4:30 to 6:30, with local music favorite NAWTY taking the stage from 7 to 9 p.m.

Lil Wranglers pony carousel, Bounce Houses and plenty of kid’s games and entertainment will return Saturday  from noon to 9 p.m.

Dutch Traditions will be found throughout the event. Authentic Dutch pastries will be brought in fresh on Saturday morning and sold by DeMotte Christian Schools. Olie Bollen will be prepared by Lowell Boy Scout Troop 101. Calumet Clowns from Hammond and Gill Knip with Twist & Smile Balloons out of San Pierre will both be on hand to offer special entertainment to kids of all ages.

Various craft vendors and specialty food vendors will be servicing the festival, and a beer garden will be open on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.  and Saturday from noon until 10 p.m.

There is no admission charge to this two-day event. There is free parking, with handicap and elderly parking and free giveaways on both days from DeMotte Chamber members.

Other sponsored events include the 5K Walk & Run Rotary Ramble sponsored by the DeMotte Rotary on Saturday morning. Trophies for this event are wooden shoes direct from Holland. For Rotary Ramble details or for an application, call Char at 219-987-2875.

A car show sponsored by the KV Music Boosters will also take place on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call Mike at 219-314-1814 for car show details and car show entry forms.

Saturday’s events will end with a huge fireworks display at dusk. NIPSCO is sponsoring the fireworks for the Touch of Dutch Festival this year and will have a booth at the main pavilion with free giveaways for festival-goers.
