The Schoolhouse Shop, located in Furnessville, offers unique gifts, artisan foods, stylish clothes and more. It is also home to the Celebration of the Arts Fair every third weekend in September.

Every year on the third weekend of September, thousands of people from several states over descend on Furnessville to attend the annual Celebration of the Arts Fair. The two-day event is sponsored by, and held at, The Schoolhouse Shop, a unique shopping destination located near the Indiana Dunes.

This year’s event is taking place Saturday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 18 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“The first showing back in 1953 was indoors and kind of slow, but it just grew from there over the years to what it is now,” Jim Ruge, co-owner of The Schoolhouse Shop, said.

This year’s event will see more than 30 artists from a wide array of disciplines including painting, photography, jewelry and pottery display their works of art on the shop grounds. There are seven states being represented by the artists attending this year’s show.

The artists are carefully chosen every year by Ruge and his staff with the only requirement being that the art is hand-crafted. He said while some artists are invited to return, they try to pick new and exciting artists each year in order to keep things fresh and bring new art to the area.

Jim Ruge, co-owner of The Schoolhouse Shop in Furnessville, checks out art at a previous fair.

“I’ve been dealing with art in some way my whole life,” Ruge said. “And Furnessville has always been an area known for art.”

Ruge said he organizes the fair more for the sake of celebrating art than for raising funds, so there is free parking for the event and no admission fee is charged. Santiago’s Mexican Restaurant of Porter will be on location serving up some authentic Mexican cuisine on the rear patio to this year’s patrons.

The Schoolhouse Shop is named as such because of the fact that it is located in what was formally the Porter County Schoolhouse, which dates back to 1886, according to the store’s website. Shoppers will find unique gifts, artisan foods, stylish clothes and more at this popular destination.

Ruge and his staff welcome customers to warm up with a cup of coffee during winter or enjoy a delicious lunch on their wooded patio in summer.

The Schoolhouse Shop is located at 278 E. CR 1500 North in Chesterton, just 2 miles east of State Road 49 off  U.S. 20. For more information about the store or the Celebration of the Arts Fair, visit www.schoolhouseshop.com or call 219-926-1551. They can also be found on Facebook.
