The Indiana Dunes Visitors Center hopes to serve more local residents and visitors now thanks to a new level 2 electric charging station that has been installed on the property.

The new electric charging station was funded by a grant from NIPSCO as part of their IN-Charge Around Town program. The IN-Charge Around Town program offers incentives for local businesses to install the electrical charging stations to help offer alternative energy to people. The level 2 charging station allows for 70 miles of range per hour of charging.

Agencies involved in the planning and installation include South Shore Clean Cities, EMCOR Hyre Electric, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and Indiana Dunes Tourism. Installation for the station was finished in early September and the first two users came on Sept. 9 and 11. The electric charging station, which can accommodate two vehicles at a time, is in the west parking lot of the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, located at 1215 N. State Road 49 in Porter.

“We hope that by offering electric vehicle charging here at the Visitor Center, we will attract a group of people who might not have otherwise visited our facility and our destination,” said Nupur Arora, Indiana Dunes Tourism Operations Director.

“And with more charging stations having been installed in communities like Portage, Chesterton and Valparaiso, people with electric vehicles can enjoy our communities and fuel up.”

Arora said electric vehicle users can enjoy the art walk on the Visitor Center grounds, tour the Visitor Center and walk or bicycle the Dunes-Kankakee Trail – which goes from the Visitor Center to Indiana Dunes State Park – while charging their vehicles.
