Healthy Kids Day (HKD) takes place on Saturday, Aprill 22 from 3 to 5 p.m.  This event is free and open to the public.  It serves as a kick-off to summer for parents to obtain free information and resources from various vendors throughout the community regarding keeping kids healthy in spirit, mind and body during the summer. The Y is also using HKD as a kick-off to Registration.  Registration fees for the camp will be waived at Healthy Kids Day.,

Total Knockout Trivia takes place on Friday, April 28 at 6 p.m. with doors opening at 5 p.m.  Mexico Lindo is the Y’s official food sponsor and will be offering all-you-can-eat-tacos for just $10.  Teams of four or eight are welcome to compete in this surely unforgettable evening.  Registration is available in three places: , the or in person.

Cocoa & Canvas also takes place on Friday, April 28th from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Y. Children will be supplied with paint, one canvas, hot cocoa, and cookies.  Participants should come to class dressed to get messy.  Registration is available on the or in person.

Parent’s Night Out will take place as usual this month from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on two Saturdays, April 8 and 22.  Parents can allow the Y to watch their children so they can have some alone time to do whatever they want, knowing their child(ren) are at a safe location.  Pre-registration is preferred but not required.

Aquatics Program Closing: The last day for the Y’s Aquatics Program will be Wednesday, April 12, as the Portage Township School Board decided that the costly upkeep and necessary repairs of the Portage High School West Pool were no longer a viable option.

What does this mean change for members?  YMCAs across the state passed reciprocity and this allows members from any other YMCA to utilize the goods and services of YMCAs at the home member rate.  Portage YMCA members can utilize Valparaiso, Hobart and Duneland Family YMCAs for their aquatics needs.  However, Portage members must use their “home” YMCA 51 percent of the time.

Moving forward, the Portage YMCA plans to use the salary funds set aside for aquatics in the 2017 budget to hire a youth sports director, as the Y’s youth sports program has most recently been ran by volunteers.  Anyone knowing of someone interested in the position should email resumes to and/or .
