The fifth annual Chalk the Walk event, sponsored by the Family & Youth Services Bureau, will take place Saturday, June 10, on the sidewalks surrounding the Porter County Courthouse in downtown Valparaiso. More than one hundred 3×3-foot squares will be filled with colorful chalk drawings, created by people of all ages and skill levels.  Each drawing is sponsored by an area business, organization or individual.

Artists will begin creating the drawings at 8 a.m. and the event will wrap up by 1 p.m.  Drawings are created using brightly colored pastel chalk, and since the drawings are put on the sidewalk in layers, they can often be seen for weeks.  If the morning weather is inclement, the event will begin later in the day.

All sponsors receive 3×3-foot spaces to create a chalk drawing on the Porter County Courthouse sidewalk, including a box of brightly colored chalk.  Sponsorships start at $150.

Since some sponsors do not know an artist, FYSB recruits artists to be paired with an artist.  There is no charge to be an artist for Chalk the Walk.  Each artist will receive instructions on doing the chalk drawing and will have a chance to connect with the sponsor before the event.

New this year is a chance for young children to be part of the event as a “Budding Artist.”   It is structured so that kids in grade school through middle school can participate in Chalk the Walk as a group and gain some experience doing chalk drawings.

Each group needs to pre-register and be supervised by an adult at all times; will consist of up to four kids, grade school to middle school age groups; will receive a designated space that is 1 feet x 8 feet long on the courthouse sidewalk. Each Budding Artist group also receives a Budding Artist t-shirt for each child and two boxes of pastel chalk.  There is no charge to participate in the Budding Artist activity for the artists; it is sponsored by 1st Source Bank.  There are limited spaces available for this activity, so early registration is recommended.

Registrations are still being accepted for sponsors and artists.  Contact Jackie Gray at 464-9585 or jgray@fysb.org for registration information or download the online registration forms at www.fysb.org.

In addition to viewing the artwork, participants and spectators will enjoy live music throughout the event.  A caricature artist will be on the square to create unique caricatures of people attending the event.  Also, there will be a number of children’s activities such as a designated chalk drawing area for children under 12 who are accompanied by a parent; face painting; and story circle.

Chalk the Walk is a family-friendly activity for the community and is an annual awareness building and fundraising event for the Family & Youth Services Bureau, which was established in 1972 and serves more than 5,000 people each year throughout Porter County.
