Parades and Fireworks- NW Indiana communities prepare to celebrate Independence Day

Here is a listing of Fourth of July parades and fireworks displays around the region.

CHESTERTON – Fireworks on the lake take place Thursday, June 29 at 9:15 p.m. at Indiana Dunes State Park, 1600 N. 25 East. Food vendors, live music, and other festivities begin at 6 p.m. Admission to the state park is $7 for Indiana residents and $10 for out-of-state vehicles. LAKE STATION – Fireworks begin at dusk on Tuesday, July 4 at Riverview Park along Ind. 51 (Ripley St.). Call 219-962-1700 or 730-1157 to learn more.

CROWN POINT – The holiday parade kicks off at 2 p.m., proceeding from Taft Middle School to Veterans Triangle on N. Main St. The fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m. at the Lake County Fairgrounds. Visit www.cpJULY4.com for more details.

HOBART – The city’s parade begins at 10 a.m. July 4 from the Mundell grounds on Wisconsin St. A holiday festival with food and music precede fireworks at Festival Park. Fireworks begin at dusk. Call 219-942-4511 or 942-5774 to learn more.

MICHIGAN CITY – The city’s holiday parade begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 1, with festivities and fireworks at Washington Park on the lakefront on July 4. Fireworks begin at dusk. Call 219-873-1510 or visit www.michigancityparks.com.

MERRILLVILLE – Parade line-up begins at noon July 4 from Geisen Funeral Home, 7905 Broadway, proceeding north to Merrillville High School. An Independence Day celebration opens at 4 p.m. at Hidden Lake Park, 6335 Broadway. Live entertainment runs from 6:30 to 11 p.m., with food vendors and a beer garden opening at 8 p.m. and fireworks at 9 p.m. Call 219-789-2111 to learn more.

PORTAGE – This city’s parade begins at 11 a.m. from Willowcreek Middle School, proceeding south of Willowcreek to Lute Rd. A holiday festival begins at 5 p.m. at Founders Square. Bands play from 6 to 10 p.m., with fireworks at dusk. Visit www.inportageparks.com for more details.

PORTER – This town’s holiday festival runs July 4 from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.; the parade begins at 9 a.m. Festivities include a pancake breakfast, turtle derby (no spapping turtles allowed), kids’ games, kiddie rides, food booths, bounce house, beer garden, and live music. SCHERERVILLE – Fireworks begin Friday, June 30 at dusk from Rohrman Park, 6750 Rohrman Rd. The public should bring chairs, blankets, and snacks. In case of inclement weather, fireworks will be rescheduled for Sunday, July 2 at dusk. Call 219-865-5530 or visit www.schererville.org.

SOUTH HAVEN – This community’s holiday parade begins at 4 p.m. from Saylor Elementary School, 331 Midway Dr. Refreshments will be served and awards will be presented later at the American Legion hall, 479 W. 750 N.

VALPARAISO  – The city’s 4th of July Blast Celebration has been moved to Cumberland Loop at Vale Park Rd. and Valparaiso St. This area will also host a stage for musical entertainment and provide a seating area. Vale Park Rd. will be closed from Valparaiso St. to Cumberland Dr., as this area will be the site for food trucks, concessions, and portable toilets.
