Dunes Learning Center Campers to Mark Occasion with Planting

As Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore moves forward in planning for another century of stewardship, it will do so with a new partner. NIPSCO and the Park have teamed up as major partners in a new Good Fellow Club Youth Camp Landscape Restoration Project at Dunes Learning Center.

On Monday, July 10, from 2:45 to 3:30 p.m., the event will commence with background on the effort, followed by a special check presentation and a planting event with Dunes Learning Center campers at the Dunes Learning Center, 700 Howe Road, Chesterton.

The planting event prior to National Pollinator Week is part of the preparation activities for a new pollinator exhibit and education experience at Dunes Learning Center’s Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore campus, benefiting future visitors, classrooms, and campers.

The new program recognizes the importance that bees and other pollinators play in our food supply and natural ecosystems. We will be planting a 1/2 acre of prairie grass, sedge’s, and wildflower species. Once established, this wildflower community will display variety of colors that will bloom from early spring to fall, creating a diverse habitat for bees and other pollinators.
