Hoosier Legionnaire William “Stan” Gatewood receives 2017 Distinguished Service Award

The American Legion, Department of Indiana  has announced that William “Stan” Gatewood has been selected to receive the 2017 Distinguished Service Award.

Every year the American Legion, Department of Indiana seeks to recognize those Legionnaires who have contributed significantly to the organization through their service to The American Legion and the State of Indiana.

A 47-year member who earned his eligibility while serving in the United States Marine Corps from 1967-1970 and served a tour in Vietnam, Gatewood is a member of Post 502 in South Haven, where he is a life member.

Gatewood served as post commander in 1984, ‘85 and ‘86.  He has also held multiple district officer positions. He served as department northern vice commander from 2004-2005 and vice chairman for the employment committee. He is also currently serving as the department Boy Scout committee chairman, which he has held for the last nine years.

Gatewood is very active in serving his community, and has been a board member of the White County Food Pantry since 2006.

The American Legion is comprised of more than 77,000 military service veterans who have served honorably during times of conflict in defense of their nation and has been active within Indiana since 1919. The Indiana American Legion has represented veterans from every major conflict since World War II to Iraq and Afghanistan within its membership.
