Viva Portage! Fiesta Mexicana Dance Company of Northwest Indiana will be performing on Sunday, Aug. 27, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m., on the new Indiana-American Water Amphitheater stage in Founders Square Park, 6300 Central Ave., Portage.  It’s all part of the 2017 Portage Summer Music Series of free entertainment held outdoors.

Fiesta Mexicana Dance Company of Northwest Indiana is a non-profit, youth-centered dance company based in Portage.  Formed and directed by Marissela Villanueva Lynch, a teacher at Willowcreek Middle School, the dance company is comprised of approximately 30 boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 18, from throughout the Northwest Indiana area and from various ethnic backgrounds.

Lynch’s dance group began as the Ballet Folklórico Tapatío of NWI, but changed its name when the group partnered with Fiesta Mexicana Dance Company of Arizona, under the direction of Lynch’s first instructor, Daniel Martinez, a former dancer with the Ballet Folklórico de Amalia Hernandez. Although Fiesta Mexicana Dance Company of Northwest Indiana specializes in traditional folkloric dances representing various regions of Mexico, under the guidance of Martinez the group has expanded its repertoire to include dances from other countries, such as Venezuela, and also the 1950s decade of the United States.  Audiences love the dancing, the music, and the beautiful and colorful folkloric costumes. It’s a great cultural experience and great entertainment for the whole family to enjoy.

Concert-goers may wish to bring a lawn chair or blanket, and a picnic basket. Also available at the concert, food and refreshments may be purchased at the Tiki Food Truck.  For shade or if rain threatens, bring an umbrella, as concerts will be held in all but violent weather.

Donations of non-perishable food, personal items, and paper products for the Portage Food Pantry and Gabriel’s Horn Women’s Homeless Shelter are welcomed for collection at every concert, but are not required.

The 2017 Portage Summer Music Series is produced in collaboration with Portage Township Live Entertainment Association (PTLEA), the Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce, and the Portage Department of Parks and Recreation.
