While Shay Furniture might look small from the outside, it is actually a 10,000-square-foot showroom filled with name brand sofas, mattresses and other home furnishings.

After years in the furniture industry, Greg Smith decided he wanted to open his own furniture store. But he knew that picking the right location would be crucial to the success of the business, especially in today’s market.

“I did a lot of homework before making the move here”, Greg said about his decision to open his business in Portage over four years ago.

“The population, the average household income, and the fact that there was no other furniture store in Portage made it an easy decision.”

Pictured, from left, are Greg Smith, owner of Shay Furniture, Iris Withererll, Tyler Smith, Karston Ott and Jason Grube. The Shay team prides themselves on helping and educating customers rather than pressuring them to buy.

Greg decided to set up shop in Central Plaza at 6234 Central Ave in Portage, next to the new Portage Police Station and Andy’s Red Hots. He admits most people see the building from the parking lot and assume they are about to walk into a tiny, cramped store, but it is actually a 10,000-square-foot showroom filled with brand name mattresses, sofas, kitchen tables and other beautiful home furnishings.

But it is not just the size of the showroom or the quality of the products that fill it that makes his store unique; it is the environment. They do not sell based on sales commission, so there is no pressure on their sales team to bombard customers as soon as they walk through the door!

“Never chase them,” he said. “I’d rather educate the customer to get the sale than pressure them to get it. And we follow through with every customer the exact same way.

“It’s their decision to make the purchase, not ours. We just assist them in making an “informed” decision.”

“We also maintain our store promise that is hard to find in any other furniture store,” “ if you special order a piece in off of just seeing a picture in the book and you don’t like that piece of furniture when it arrives in our store, you are not stuck with it.” “We have a no re-stocking fee policy in place.” “Our job is to help the customer find the right furniture for their home. If we can’t do that right the first time, why should they pay extra,” he said.

Greg said it is this environment that has helped him make a lot of friends in the area over the last four years. He said many customers return to his store just to ask him questions, and we don’t mind at all!

“We want to help them. They may not buy anything, but that’s not important as long as we help them,” he said.

If this environment and sales ethic are their first two assurances to customers, Greg said our third is a guarantee to never be beaten on price. And we promise that both on our Website (WWW.SHAYFURNITURE.COM ) and when we talk to our customers in person.

This has all led to a successful fourth year of business for Shay Furniture. We want to let our customers and the community know we appreciate them by holding an anniversary blowout sale on Saturday, Aug. 26.
