As we approach the holiday season, the United Way RSVP is spotlighting the gift of giving with two programs.

The Crafting for Love project features handmade items that volunteers create through the holidays. Items include hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, stuffed animals, wooden toys and jewelry. All items are sorted, wrapped and gifted to local homeless shelters, youth organizations, veteran associations, food pantries and nonprofits.

RSVP is also leading its fifth annual Sample Size Drive from now until Jan. 1. The drive collects sample sizes of such items as shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, deodorant, soap body wash, shaving cream and lotion. You may have some available from past overnight stays.

The donations are made into care packages for local food pantries, homeless shelters and nonprofits for community members who don’t have the funds for personal hygiene products and for those on government assistance. Some packages will also be sent overseas to U.S. troops. During the drive last year, more than 10,000 items were collected.

For more information on the projects or how to get involved, contact RSVP director Evelyn Harris at 219-464-3583 or evelyn@unitedwaypc.org.

Ramp donations sought

We are fortunate to have skilled volunteers from the Chicago UAW/Ford Community Service Ramp Project team working with us again to construct ramps for individuals who need help accessing their homes. Even with the talent of the volunteer team and additional program funding, we still have community members on a waiting list. There are several more individuals who need help accessing their homes and we hope to help them with your assistance!

We are accepting donations to help fund materials to possibly surpass our goal of 15 ramps.

To help support our ramp program, you can donate online via our website, www.portercountyacs.org, by clicking on the “How You Can Help” button or mail a check payable to PCACS to 1005 Campbell St., Valparaiso, IN 46385.

We thank you for your continued support.

What’s new

We have worked hard as a team to update our website! We hope that it offers a better understanding of what we do in an easy-to-navigate package that is visually appealing. Let us know what you think of the new site, which can be viewed at www.portercountyacs.org.

We have added to our social media offerings. We are now posting to Twitter and Instagram, in addition to Facebook. We not only share our news and photos, but also community events and nonprofit happenings.

Find us on Twitter at https://twitter.com/PorterCACS and Instagram at www.instagram.com/portercacs.

We continue with our office improvements and are grateful for all of the hard work by Chester Architectural and Construction Services. We are enjoying new windows, which give us a whole new view of the world. We are also painting inside and remodeling our front façade.

To follow our progress, watch for photos on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PCACS/.
