New United Way AmeriCorps program director seeks members and host sites

The United Way of Porter County has named Maddie Grimm Director of the United Way AmeriCorps program serving Lake, Porter, LaPorte and Marshall Counties.

The United Way of Porter County has named Maddie Grimm Director of the United Way AmeriCorps program serving Lake, Porter, LaPorte and Marshall Counties.

Grimm will lead a team of 46 members annually to meet community need by offering support services to area schools and nonprofits.

“Maddie’s experience as an AmeriCorps member and in nonprofit and education work is key to having a successful program,” said Kim Olesker, president & CEO of United Way of Porter County. “Her leadership sets the bar for us to provide a wonderful experience for our host sites and the individuals serving in AmeriCorps.”

Grimm’s work experience includes tenure at Schererville Parks and Recreation, Taltree Arboretum and Gardens, Dunes Learning Center and Sheridan School Mountain Campus. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resources from the University of the South and a Master’s degree in Environmental Education from Goshen College. She is an AmeriCorps alumni and is a certified EMT-basic.

The 2017-18 AmeriCorps program year has begun and Grimm is looking for members to participate. AmeriCorps members serve as K-12 tutors in area schools, high school career advisors and non-profit capacity builders. AmeriCorps members gain new skills and experiences while meeting critical needs in. Program placements run now through June 2018 depending upon placement.

Applicants must be 18 years or older and a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident. All ages are welcomed to apply. Full-time, part-time and minimum-time positions are available. Each placement offers a stipend and an education award that can be used for past, current and future education debt. Some participants may even qualify for student loan deferment during their service term.

“United Way of Porter County has supported the AmeriCorps program in Northwest Indiana for more than 10 years,” said Maddie Grimm, United Way AmeriCorps program director. “I’m proud to support community programs that could not be done without the help of our members.”
