The Valparaiso Family YMCA and St. Mary Medical Center will host a free health fair for the community from 9:00 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Feb. 24 at the YMCA, 1201 Cumberland Crossing Drive in Valparaiso.

“Plan your best health in 2018 – spirit, mind and body,” said Brittany Tripp, YMCA wellness director. “We are focused on the development of youth, healthy living options for people of all ages, and to support our community residents to live well. Our goal is to provide programs and services that inspire our community to get healthy and stay healthy.”

St. Mary Medical Center health services and screenings will be represented at the event. These include free screenings for bone density, peripheral vascular disease, pulmonary function, and type 2 diabetes, as well as body mass index (BMI) screenings and blood pressure checks.

Pharmacist Jonathan Guerrero, of the hospital’s Coumadin Clinic, will conduct a brown-bag lunch event at which participants are invited to bring their prescription medicines for a free med check. Dietitian Rachel Savage will give attendees the opportunity to “Meet with a Dietitian” to learn helpful hints about good nutrition and building positive eating habits.

“Our hospital focuses on meeting the wellness needs of the community through meaningful programs and activities,” said Christy Cleveland, Health and Wellness Coordinator for St. Mary Medical Center. “By partnering with great community organizations, such as the YMCA, we are able to bring these programs closer to home.”

Other St. Mary Medical Center programs and services to be represented at the event include: the hospital’s new Pain Center, physical therapy, the High-Risk Breast Clinic, Occupational Health, the Acute Rehabilitation Unit, the Concussion Clinic, Healthy 4 Life, Cancer Care, the Joint Academy, and the Sleep Lab. Also, hospital human resources staff will discuss current career opportunities with St. Mary Medical Center and Community Healthcare System.
