Poetry Contest Winners

A comic drawing class and young poets wrapped up Northwest Indiana’s World Creativity and Innovation Week on Saturday, April 28. These events concluded a month-long focus to “Create, Connect, Celebrate!” creativity and innovation.

Area artist, William Halliar, Jr. shared his techniques, tips and philosophies in a comics drawing class, “Let’s Draw Supervillains with Bill.” For over 20 years, he has applied his brand of creativity to designing animation, comics, logos, monsters and, most recently, story boards for television ads.

Announcing18 poetry winners, William Halliar, Sr., chairperson for Northwest Indiana’s Creativity and Innovation Week, said 46 entries were submitted. Students from New Prairie High School High School and Queen of All Saints School in Michigan City swept the honors.

Grades 7 and 8, classes of Ms. Kopczyk and Ms. Gondeck:

1st – Mary Kate Neary

2nd – Nevaha Pam

3rd – Leah Lawson

Grades 9 and 10, class of Ms. Menke:

1st – Colton Kitchen

2nd – Logan Francis

3rd – Hillary Alexa

In addition to a poetry contest, the Center sponsored competitions in art and songwriting. Winning the art contest were:

1st -Palmoa Valdes, Ms. Smith’s 7th grade class at St. Stanislaus School, Michigan City

2nd -Evia Vandercar, Ms. Hering’s 6th grade class at South Central Elementary School

3rd -Dakara Galvan, Ms. Gondeck’s 8th grade class at Queen of All Saints School, Michigan City

Three songwriters were honored for their musical compositions. They included:

1st -Ted Calvin

2nd -Tommie Billups

3rd -Jadoi Danuza

Each year, the Center for Creative Solutions has led the location efforts to encourage the use of innovation in everyone’s homes, schools, workplaces, organizations, government and communities. It is a non-profit organization providing facilitation, training and consulting to businesses and organizations across the United States.
