Dr. Anthony Lavenda, left, from Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute presents the National Athletic Trainer of theYear Award to Bernie Stento, from Chesterton High School.

In partnership with several leading orthopaedic practices, including Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute of Chesterton and the surrounding areas, The Newell Award National Committee reviewed regional nominees from across the nation to determine which nominee best exemplifies the values of the award’s namesake, William E. Newell, the “Father of Athletic Training.”

Regional nominees were determined based on examples of service, leadership and shared experiences from local community members. More than 400 exceptional shared experiences were received in support of Stento’s regional nomination for the National Award.

Stento, a longtime certified local athletic trainer and health educator for the community and Chesterton High School, received his bachelor of science degree in health education and athletic training from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York. He then went on to earn his master of science degree in exercise and sports science and athletic training from The University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona. He has been extremely involved in the sports medicine community for over 20 years, caring for injured athletes and educating future athletic trainers through his work.

“It is an incredible honor to be chosen for this national award. I love working with our local athletes and seeing their daily improvement with the activities they love,” says Stento. “I have been a certified athletic trainer for the past 28 years. I try to be a positive force in the lives of those I meet and do what’s in the best interest of our student athletes at Chesterton High School by bringing my ‘A’ game each day and providing proper planning to avoid poor performance.

The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award recognizes athletic trainers for the service and leadership they provide local athletic communities. Nominees for The Newell National Athletic Trainer of the Year Award are determined regionally in partnership with local leading orthopaedic practices.
