Whether you are a parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, guardian or just remember what it was like to be a kid, you understand the challenges children are confronted with in school these days. Between bullying, peer pressure, and the need to be accepted, children do not need to face any additional barriers in order to be successful in school. NorthShore Health Centers recognizes these challenges which is why we are having our annual Back to School Health Promotion from July 1 through August 31, providing backpacks and school supplies with each school or sports physical.

NorthShore Health Center is a not-for-profit community based health and education center providing medical, dental and eye care services to everyone including the uninsured and underinsured community of Northwest Indiana. Our mission is to ensure that each individual has a medical home and access to the highest quality healthcare, regardless of gender, age, race, social or cultural standing and/or ability to pay.

Imagine how it feels to be a parent with a list of school supplies needed for their children’s school and no way to purchase them or a child that has to go to school without the supplies they need. This not only puts our children in an embarrassing situation, it hinders them from having the resources they need to learn and grow. This past year, NorthShore expanded its outreach program in both Lake and Porter counties to help ensure children have access to quality healthcare at an affordable price. In 2017, NorthShore saw 18,224 children between the ages of 0-18 years old in which 14,114 are of school age and low income.

Given the significant number of low income children we provide services for, NorthShore will be purchasing 3,000 backpacks and schools supplies to give to the children in the community with a need for them. The wonder of helping children is that it may change the future – you’re only a child once. NorthShore recognizes that what we do now has a profound effect on these children’s future.

Childhood is a time of rapid growth and change. NorthShore also encourages preventative health checkups which are important to promote physical and mental health and a time when patients and providers can develop an open line of communication.

Each visit includes a complete physical examination. During this exam, the healthcare provider will check the child’s growth and development and try to detect any problems early on. The healthcare provider will record your child’s height, weight and other important information. Hearing and vision test which are required by most schools and recommended immunizations will be part of your child’s checkup as well.
