The term “dementia” describes progressive disorders affecting the brain such as vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Those diagnosed with dementia often have difficulty communicating, mood regulation, and completing day to day tasks. Residences at Coffee Creek is taking large strides to enhance the quality of life for those diagnosed with dementia by providing residents in their memory support with the latest technology in therapeutic care to help the challenges that those with dementia may face. The new community will feature a room dedicated to multi-sensory therapy by engaging all five senses: vision, touch, smell, hearing and taste.

What is a multi-sensory environment? Imagine a comfortable space integrating a combination of calming aromas, colored lighting, different temperatures, and soothing sounds. It is a relaxing environment that helps reduce agitation and also anxiety. It encourages communication and stimulates reactions for those with dementia.  This therapeutic program provides residents with high levels of stimuli to nourish and soothe their minds but also provides calming sensations such as natural sounds of birds chirping or the sound of waterfalls to east their agitation. The environment will also feature comfortable seating, bubble tubes, wall and floor cushions, a projector, fiber optic lighting, essential oil diffusing and more.

This is an example of a Snoezelen® Multi-Sensory Therapy environment. This specifically programed space will provide the memory care residents at Residences at Coffee Creek a soothing environment to help relax, calm or energize their spirit. Residences Senior Living communities are two of only a few communities in the Midwest to offer the Snoezelen® Multi-Sensory Therapy program to its memory care residents.
