Last year, Kate Perschon donated 10 inches of her hair to celebrate the 10th year of her son’s remission from childhood cancer.

Participants from last year’s St. Baldrick’s event shave their heads for childhood cancer awareness.

The Northwest Indiana Cancer Kids Foundation will host its eighth annual St. Baldrick’s Event at the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 in Merrillville on March 10 from noon to 4:00 p.m.

The NICK Foundation’s goal is to raise $55,110 to provide funds for pediatric cancer research.

Nicole Yarrow, director of services at NICK, said it is important to find other pediatric care treatment because the current treatment is harmful to pediatric cancer patients.

“The treatment children receive is just watered-down adult chemo and that is unacceptable,” Yarrow said. “A lot of children with cancer have heart damage caused by the chemotherapy, and it can result in death. St. Baldrick’s goal is not only to find cures, but to focus on less toxic treatments and prevent lifelong damage to children.”

Volunteers and local businesses are donating their time and services toward the cause

“This day is such a whirlwind, but it is so much fun,” Yarrow said. “The event is kid-friendly and it’s for the whole family. People come together to raise money for pediatric cancer research while having a fun time. It is an amazing experience.”

Amanda Knight, cancer survivor and NICK volunteer, has been participating in the event for three years. She previously dressed up as Queen Elsa and this year she will be participating again.

“The St. Baldrick’s event is such an encouragement to me,” Knight said. “We’re raising money for research, standing alongside those who are fighting in our community, sharing smiles and laughter with friends and family and giving hope for fuller, longer lives.”

The NICK Foundation is a non-profit pediatric cancer organization founded in 2009, dedicated to helping families in Northwest Indiana affected by childhood cancer.
