S. O. S. – Speaking of Seniors- Helped client with $11,176.33 in bills

On Jan. 14, 2019, Nour Kalam delivered some bills to me to check for a client.  Nour Kalam is one of our insurance agents at our office in Munster.  The bills totaled $11,176.33.  The client is from Crown Point.

There were only two bills which totaled that amount.  One was from a local hospital and the other was from a medical service that uses a billing service in Texas.  When I checked with the client’s Medicare supplement insurance company, I learned that the bill problem was caused by a continuing problem in the Medicare system.  Medicare failed to send the claims information to the patient’s insurance company.  You can’t blame an insurance company for not paying a bill that Medicare failed to send to it.

To help our client, I sent a letter to each medical service to explain what had happened and request that they send the critical claims information directly to our client’s Medicare supplement insurance company.

I did not see or review the Medicare report about these claims.  So I am unable to state that everything on the bills will be paid.  But I can state that every claim item on the bills that Medicare approves will be paid either by Medicare or the supplemental insurance.  There are some things that Medicare does not cover.  But I did not see any suspicious items on our client’s bills.

If I had not helped our client with these bills, he would have been hounded by bill collectors until he started paying.  That really is not fair to senior citizens, but it happens all the time because of some repeating problems in the Medicare system.
