There are some exciting improvements being made at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville.  A new website is being produced that will permit families the ability to visit our new e-commerce store to make purchases for many items.  Included will be urns, photo blankets, cremation jewelry, different publications and videos, and eventually, preneed funeral services, caskets, and vaults.

In our busy world, a world that sees almost everyone walking around with a smart phone of some kind, it is Calumet Park Cemetery’s (and all three funeral homes – Merrillville, Hobart and Gary) intention to make it possible to have answers to all of your cemetery and funeral questions right in the palm of your hand.  We realize that in our fast-paced world, a world in which all knowledge known to mankind is readily accessible with a couple of clicks that we must adjust to stay relevant.

It is hoped that having access to everything “cemetery, funeral home and cremations” will take away some of the fear that we tend to have when it comes to talking about death, and what to do when it happens regarding cemetery and funeral arrangements.  The new website will have testimonials from families that have been served by Calumet Park. There will be Youtube-type videos, from short descriptions of things like caskets and vaults all the way up to fuller-length videos that will be designed for the viewer who wants a deeper understanding of the topics that will be covered.

This is where you, the reader, can help us.  Please email or snail-mail topics that you would like to know more about. For instance, most people do not know that we have our own plane/pilot and can release cremains from the air. We can have a funeral service at a beach or on one’s farm or just about anywhere and anyway that a family finds appealing and memorable.  We are able to meet the needs of any person or family, working together to be creative in having this final goodbye done is such a way as to remember the experience of dying with a little tenderness and love for those in attendance.

The goal is to celebrate a life that was lived.  When any of us die, there are so many people that may be affected, from families and friends to work relationships, church buddies, and so many more.  There will be a lifetime of grieving and learning how to live without that special person in our lives, so let the funeral ceremony and committal to a final resting place be a springboard to whatever the future holds.

The new website will show pictures and videos of products, cemetery views that can be quite breathtaking depending on the time of year, and prices for programs that are more about the memory that can be created on the celebration of life versus the money spent.  We can tailor simple ceremonies that are inexpensive and meaningful all the way up to elaborate affairs that conclude in a horse-and-buggy carriage ride from the funeral home or even a final ride to the cemetery in a Harley Hearse.

The only limiting factor in designing a final goodbye is one’s imagination.  And for those who can see in their mind’s eye but have trouble communicating their wishes, our staff will be happy to assist you to make sure your loved one’s day is special in every way.  It has been said that we all tend forget what was said but remember how we were made to feel when something is said to us.  That goes for funerals, too.  Price is absolutely a part of the equation, but priceless is the funeral that is talked about for years for the beauty and way that it captured the life and love of the person at the center of the event.

Make no mistake, death is an event.  Birth, graduations, marriages and weddings, divorce, having kids, buying a house and turning it into a home, are all events. Most are happy events and death is the complete opposite.  It is one of the greatest tragedies of being born that we are already on our way to dying. By exploring our new website, you may find some things that will make such a transition a little easier to live with, whether you ultimately use one of our facilities or any of the other wonderful cemeteries or funeral homes in this area, or in any part of the country for that matter.

So, go to mycalumetpark.com and save it in your favorites and stop by once in a while to see what is new at Calumet Park and all facilities owned by Calumet Park.  This is our 91st year of being a family-owned business that caters to the needs of those who have lost a loved one.  It is possible that your occasional browsing at our new website when you are in a normal state of mind may help you when the time comes that you are the one that must make decisions.  It will be much better to have some knowledge and awareness of all that is involved when death occurs than to come in on the worst day of your life and not thinking clearly.
