The last cup of lemon rice soup and the last order of biscuits and gravy will be served on Sunday at Rosewood Family Restaurant, 2606 Portage Mall in Portage. Owners Maggie and Marko Karakozis will be closing their doors to the family-run business on Sunday, July 5 at 4:00 p.m.

The restaurant, basically an institution in Portage, has been there for 45 years and is located off of Central Avenue in what was originally the Portage Mall. The Karakozis’ ran the business with Pete and Kathy Mamounas for many years until both Pete and Kathy died. They had all been through a lot together at the restaurant including a fire more than 20 years ago which prompted them to rebuild the restaurant at the same location.

Maggie Karakozis said it was time to say goodbye to the restaurant. “We have been doing this for so many years and basically my husband, Marko and I work seven days a week,” she said. Maggie mans the register and greets the customers while Marko cooks up the dishes for the customers.

“To be able to retire while we are still healthy is a great thing,’ Maggie said.  “We want to retire and still be able to enjoy life.”

Maggie said she and Marko have so many good memories including all the great people they have met over the years.

“So many people have reached out to us over the past few weeks telling us how much they are going to miss us. This is definitely going to be bittersweet. Customers have been calling us asking when our last day is so they can come in and get one more cup of soup or one more serving of biscuits and gravy. That means a lot to us.”

Maggie said she and her husband had always said once their children graduated from college they would retire and they are keeping to their word.

But Maggie realizes they could not have stayed open for 45 years without word of mouth.

“People like the good food and all the soups and homemade dishes,” she said. “People come here because they are comfortable here,” she said. “We didn’t just get families here. We got groups coming here for weekly and monthly meetings, celebrations, funeral dinners. I feel we are definitely a landmark.”

Maggie and Marko both feel that these 45 years have been a great accomplishment.

“Being able to stay and prosper and keep going without a lot of places nearby has been good for us,” she said.

“Thank you to all the wonderful people of Portage who have come to our establishment,” she said. “People who came here as kids are now bringing their own kids here.”
It’s been a nice ride.”

The couple agreed they thought it will be sad to leave, they feel it is nice to move on.

“People don’t realize how running a business consumes your life,” Marko said. “The only day we closed was Christmas. I was doing the cooking and that’s hard seven days a week.”

“We want to have a normal life and we want to enjoy life,” she said. “It’s really nice to hear that people appreciate you.”

Maggie said that they could not have had the success over the years without the wonderful servers, cooks and employees.

“We could not do all this without each and everyone of them,” Maggie said. “So thank you to our staff and to all of our loyal customers. We stayed here all these years because of them.”
