Sen. Ed Charbonneau

State Sen. Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso) was recently chosen as a recipient of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners’ (AANP) 2020 Advocate State Award for Excellence.

The Advocate State Award for Excellence is given annually to an individual in each state who has made a significant contribution toward increasing awareness and recognition of nurse practitioners.

Charbonneau has long been an advocate for allowing Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) to practice to the full extent of their training, as seen through his work on Senate Bill 394 during the 2019 legislative session. SB 394 would have allowed experienced APRNs who meet high professional qualifications to practice without the need for a collaborative agreement with a doctor. This policy would have been a significant step toward addressing the health care shortage facing many Hoosiers currently living in underserved counties.

During the 2020 legislative session, Charbonneau continued his work to advance the profession of nurse practitioners by sponsoring House Enrolled Act 1392, which allows an APRN to certify the cause of death for an individual and sign the death certificate if the APRN was last in attendance upon the deceased.

“Ensuring the well-being of Hoosiers remains a top priority for me, and the work of nurse practitioners is critical to ensuring that all Hoosiers have access to high-quality health care,” Charbonneau said. “I am honored to have my work recognized by the AANP, and I will continue to serve as an advocate for policies that further advances nurse practitioners.”

The ANNP is a national organization with more than 110,000 members who work to empower all nurse practitioners to advance quality health care through practice, education, advocacy, research and leadership.
