On September 16, 2020, a client from De Motte brought a medical bill to me at our Merrillville office. He wanted to know if he should pay the bill for $461.67.
The client bought a Medicare supplement insurance policy from our agency. The policy covered any balance for a medical service that Medicare approved. So immediately I knew that there was something wrong with the bill.
I invited the client to join me in my office and we made phone calls together. First, we phoned his insurance company to discuss the bill. We learned that the medical billing firm was violating federal Medicare rules by sending our client the bill for $461.67.
Then, we phoned the medical firm that sent the bill. I asked them why they sent the bill to our client in violation of Medicare rules and regulations. Specifically, they did not show that Medicare approved a charge of only $33.32, that Medicare paid its share and that the insurance company paid its share of the bill. Medicare ruled that most of the bill had to be discounted. That left a balance of zero for our client to pay.
The medical biller reviewed the matter and realized that I had caught them in a serious mistake of violating Medicare rules. The representative promised to correct the bill to a balance of zero for our client. Thus, I was able to save our client $461.67.
All the help that I gave this client was free. This insurance agency is proud of our reputation for “going the extra mile” to help our clients with such medical bill matters, why not switch to an insurance agency that does?
