Sometimes the number 13 proves lucky.
This summer, Dawn Williams, 17, representing the South Haven Boys and Girls Club, was named one of 13 regional finalists in the Boys and Girls Clubs national Youth of the Year competition, making her the highest-placing Porter County club member in the 63-year-old national event.
Five winners from five regions go on to vie for the Youth of the Year title. Williams will be a senior this year at Portage High School. Read More

Every dog has its day – or at least a Saturday.
For the past three years, one Saturday in July has been set aside to make sure that dogs around Northwest Indiana receive their due.

But one thing that has proved to be consistent about WVUR, The Source, Valparaiso University’s student radio station, is its ability to outshine the competition. The Source, 95.1 FM, has been the recipient of the Indiana Association of Student Broadcasters’ (IASB) Radio School of the Year award three out of the past five years. Unpaid internships and volunteer opportunities are not just for students anymore. This strategy is a great way for career changers and job seekers to get their foot in the door of a particular industry.
The trendy new term: returnship is for seasoned professionals and provides a way for you to test-drive an organization from the inside to determine if it’s a good fit. Likewise, the employer will learn what you are capable of and if a position becomes available, you will have a competitive edge if you performed well as a volunteer. While some returnships pay, most are voluntary, and the time frame may last a few weeks or months depending on the organization.
The Sara Lee Corporation launched the returnship model and provides opportunities for mid-career individuals re-entering the workforce after having been away for a number of years. Their pilot returnship program was so successful that it is now an integrated part of the company’s ongoing recruitment efforts. Read More
