With ‘Boomers’ Retiring, The Need Increases

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines the term “baby boom” as a marked rise in birthrate, as was the case in the U.S. immediately following the end of WWII when soldiers were coming home, marrying their sweethearts, going to college – thanks to the G.I Bill – and buying homes.

Now, about 77 million baby boomers are preparing to retire across the country, many of whom are in good health, and are looking forward to making the most of their retirement. Retirement communities all over Northwest Indiana are getting ready to meet the demands of a good number of those boomers who decide to stay right where they are.

One such venue is the Rittenhouse Senior Living Community, with locations in Valparaiso, Michigan City and a soon-to-be-opened Portage facility.

Rittenhouse is a state-licensed facility that residents who are looking to maintain an independent lifestyle might find attractive. Betsy Cuellar, the director of marketing for Rittenhouse’s Portage branch, said that the number of seniors who want to be a part of communities like Rittenhouse is on the rise.

Thus the need to build the new location in Portage.

“Many of our residents in assisted living just need someone to look out for them,” Cuellar said. “Some may forget to take their medication; others may need someone to come and check their vitals. Some residents just need to be in a place where medical assistance will be nearby in case it’s needed.”

Rittenhouse offers large, private and spacious apartments with kitchenettes, lovely grounds to relax by and meeting areas where new friendships are made.

“Many of our residents had homes that they couldn’t or didn’t want to take care of anymore,” Cuellar said. “Those who are in the independent living facility are absolutely free to come and go as they want to. Our residents can have visitors and guests and decorate their place however they want to.”

The Rittenhouse community in Portage is scheduled to open this fall, and monthly rental fees begin at $1,865. The community is so large that it is often mistaken for a small subdivision.

“It’s a lot easier to drive across town to visit grandma and grandpa than it is to drive two or three towns over. There’s a big demand for these sorts of communities, and the owners of Rittenhouse have 20 years of experience fulfilling that sort of need,” Cueller said.

Another similar community is Brentwood at Hobart.

Located at 1420 Saint Mary’s Circle in Hobart, Brentwood is a part of Emeritus Senior Living communities and is one of Indiana’s premier assisted living and Alzheimer’s communities. This community consists of 116 apartments on two floors. Residents – often with their pets – live out their retirement here where a helping hand from warm, caring staff, many of whom have been with the community for years, is always close by.

Brentwood features a dining room, TV room, library, activity center and beauty salon where residents can enjoy each others’ company. The community offers an array of daily activities on location, as well as offsite trips to places such as Lake Michigan.

Brentwood is located in a residential area, but is only a short distance away from restaurants, downtown Hobart, Lake George and the Westfield Shopping Mall. Even closer – for convenience and safety of residents – is St. Mary Medical Center and other medical facilities.
