It may be sweltering out now, but the Portage Exchange Club is already thinking Christmas, gearing up for its annual car raffle to fund a holiday shopping event.

The event is one of the club’s major projects, according to Mary Jo Bryan of Portage, who reaches out and helps individuals and organizations in her community as a member and president of the Portage Exchange Club.

“Our biggest project is the Christmas shopping event, where we spend around $10,000 each year to help parents purchase new clothing or outerwear for their children,” Bryan said.

“These funds come from our car raffle,” Bryan explained.  The club is selling tickets to win a 2010 Ford Focus – or you may take a $10,000 check instead of the car. If fewer than 1,200 tickets are sold, the prize will be 50 percent of the proceeds.

Bryan joined the club in January of 1992 and began a term as president on July 1 this year. As owner of Bryans Travel in Portage, Bryan joined the Exchange Club to help residents in the community and to meet new friends.

“The Exchange Club is a great organization to belong to,” Bryan said.” We conduct annual fundraisers so that we can help others – whether it be the Portage Police Dept., the Portage Fire Dept., Challenger Little League players, the YMCA, Gabriel’s Horn, or our special yearly event with Christmas shopping for kids in need.”

Help the club make this a successful event by purchasing a ticket, or by making a donation to the Christmas shopping event, slated for Saturday, Oct. 2, from noon-4 p.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 6540 Central Ave.  Food plus arts and crafts will be available for purchase by the church. Anyone interested in purchasing a raffle ticket may call Bryan at 763-6260.
