Retired and Senior Volunteer Program

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Porter County is offering beginner computer classes to seniors. These classes are for seniors who have never used a computer before. The class consists of turning the computer on, moving the mouse and basic email.

New class sessions begin in October and November. Class dates are Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays for four consecutive weeks at 2:30 p.m.
Class size is limited to four students and fee is $5 for all four classes. Class location is 1005 Campbell St. in Valparaiso. For more information or to enroll, call the RSVP office at 464-1028.

Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter

The 10th annual Walk for Lupus Now event is scheduled for Sept. 11 at Festival Park in Hobart. The event is a 5K/3.1 mile non-competitive walk and benefits the Lupus Foundation of America, Indiana Chapter (LFA). Proceeds from the annual walk will help increase lupus awareness and education, maintain support groups and support lupus research.

Chesterton/Duneland Kiwanis Club

The Chesterton/Duneland Kiwanis Club is proud to announce their Kiwanis K-9 Krazy 9 Outing, a golf outing in which half of the proceeds will be donated to the Chesterton Police Department and their effort to secure a K-9 Unit. The event will be held Sept. 20 at the Brassie Golf Club in Chesterton. Registration will be at 10:30 a.m. and shotgun start at noon.

Participants may only use either the putter or the 9-iron, allowing even the most unskilled golfer to enjoy the event. Cost to attend is $60 per golfer which includes lunch catered by Third Coast Spice Café. Hole sponsorships are $100 and include signage and recognition at the event. Connections: Health and Social Service Networking

Connections is an organization consisting of a wide variety of health and social service organizations who meet monthly for educational programs and networking. Connections meets every fourth Tuesday except in December and November when we meet on the third Tuesday.

The meeting kicks off with bring-your-own-lunch (BYOL) and networking from 11:30 a.m.-noon when a brief business meeting starts and then the presentation. Meetings adjourn at approximately 1 p.m.

Connections is a great way to network, discuss issues and learn about other services available for your clients. For more information, call 793-9023.

Portage Township YMCA

The Portage Township YMCA will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair Sept. 7-10 in the YMCA lobby. The fair will be open to the public from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 3 p.m.-6 p.m. on Sept. 8 and 10 and from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 2 p.m.-7 p.m. on Sept. 7 and 9. Money raised will benefit the YMCA Child Care and Development Center in the effort to buy new books and puzzles for the center.

Horizon Gymnastics Center

Registrations for all classes at Horizon Gymnastics Center in Valparaiso are taking place now through Sept. 17 for the Back to School session which runs Sept. 13-Oct. 30. Registration times are Monday through Friday from 12-6 p.m. GymJam classes are specifically for boys and girls ages 6 and older who want to learn gymnastics skills for fun. Totally Tumbling classes concentrate on progressive floor skills for students who prefer just tumbling or are working toward advanced cheerleading skills.

The GymMagic program is for younger children ages 18 months to Kindergarten and includes movement and fitness classes – with an adult – as well as an introduction to gymnastics, sports, cheerleading, and progressive gymnastics options.
