Osteoporosis – porous bone – is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, making the bones fragile and more susceptible to fractures. In the United States alone, 10 million individuals – eight million of them women – have osteoporosis and another 34 million are at risk due to low bone mass. Yet, osteoporosis is preventable. The following are suggestions for reducing your chances of developing osteoporosis:

Avoid alcohol and smoking – Cigarette smoking was first identified as a risk factor for osteoporosis more than 20 years ago. Recent studies have shown a direct relationship between tobacco use and decreased bone density. Alcohol negatively impacts bone health for several reasons. Heavy alcohol consumption has been linked to an increase in the risk of fracture,

Get 1,000-1,300 mg of calcium every day – Getting enough calcium, whether through diet or supplements, is essential to maintaining bone strength and can play a vital role in preventing osteoporosis. An eight-ounce glass of milk contains 300 mg of calcium.

Exercise – Muscle pulling on bone builds bone, so weight-bearing exercise builds denser, stronger bones. Daily weight-bearing exercise helps reduce bone mineral loss and maintains good muscle tone and heart function.

Get a bone mineral density test – Bone is living tissue that responds to exercise by becoming stronger. If you are at risk or are 65 years or older, consult your doctor for a physician order.
