The City of Valparaiso will be adding a shiny, almost new fire truck to its firefighting fleet, thanks to the cooperation efforts of the city, Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission and Center Township. The new “quint,” combination pumper will combine the ability of a Class A pumper, and a ladder truck with both aerial and ground ladders, and a hose truck.
Many positives came together at once to make this safety upgrade a reality,” Mayor Jon Costas said. “The Valpo Fire Department found a quality demonstration model at a good price. The Redevelopment Commission was able to provide funding, and Center Township is stepping in to pay off the loan on an existing pumper, giving them added protection as well.”
The new quint should be in use in Valparaiso by the end of October. The cost is $542,000, funded by the Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission, which represents more than $200,000 in savings over a new model. In addition, the city looks to save about $380,000 in lease payments on an existing truck through an agreement with Center Township, which will also serve to enhance fire safety throughout the township.

Upgrading and maintaining our firefighting tools is essential to providing service into the future,” Fire Chief David Nondorf said. “Not only are we in the best position to fight fires in all situations, but we can offer services to other departments when we have the manpower and equipment available. This cooperation between government entities and fire departments adds up to the best in fire service.”
The Valparaiso Fire Department serves over 35,000 residents in an area that includes the City of Valparaiso as well as Center Township and surrounding communities with 67 full-time firefighters providing fire, medical and rescue services.
In addition to responding to approximately 3,900 emergency calls annually, the Valparaiso Fire Department provides proactive prevention services such as fire safety inspections of commercial properties, site plan reviews, car safety seat inspections and fire safety education.
