Local Resident receives Golden Hoosier Award
Award honors Hoosier seniors for their volunteerism

Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman and Secretary Anne W. Murphy of the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) presented Porter County resident Gail Ofte-Atha with the Golden Hoosier Award. The event, held at the The Garrison, honored 27 senior Hoosiers from around the state for their volunteer work in the community.
Ofte-Atha was awarded the Golden Hoosier Award in recognition of her service in the community. She has devoted her time to serving as an on-call volunteer for the District One Disaster Mental Health Team and the Porter County American Red Cross, providing telephone support and emotional support at a child care center as well as helping in the FEMA line, training on psychological first aid and trauma response.
“Gail is one of countless Hoosiers who serve our state and the community daily, never asking anything in return,” Skillman said. “She is truly making a difference in the community and helping to build a strong Indiana.”
Lt. Governor Skillman and the FSSA collaborated to create the Golden Hoosier Award; it is considered one of the highest honors given by the state to seniors.
“I would like to commend each recipient of the 2010 Golden Hoosier Award and thank them for the dedication they have shown to improving the lives of those around them,” Murphy said.
What makes Indiana great is not the strength of our industries, but the strength and compassion of our citizens. These award winners exemplify the caring and selflessness that sets Hoosiers apart from everyone else.”
Recipients celebrated with family, friends and representatives from Area Agencies on Aging and local organizations at the The Garrison at Fort Harrison in Indianapolis.
