Wanting to increase productivity through the use of social media, Public Sphere Communications Director of Public Relations, Monica Jimenez and Director of Communications, Nathyn Gibson joined local business owners and professionals at Tuesday’s Northwest Indiana Tweetup at Cornucopia Coffee Company in Valparaiso to learn about different social networking sites and how to implement the sites in their own organization.

“We want to provide our client with every possible mean of communication and make sure we are able to do it in a productive way. The NWI Tweetup is a perfect opportunity for us not only to learn about the productivity of social media, but it is also a great tool to help with being able to network efficiently,” Jimenez said.

Public Sphere Communications is a not-for-profit consulting firm established by 10 Purdue University Calumet students as part of an experiential learning course at the university. The firm specializes in performing internal communication audits for businesses, and classes in previous years have performed audits for organizations such as Nipsco, Staff Source and Goble and Associates.

This same service offered from an established firm would typically cost an organization three times the amount. A communication audit helps companies enhance their internal and external communication structure.

While performing the audit, the students who make up PSC will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the public relations field. PSC is currently seeking clients and is in the process of scheduling presentations.

During the ‘tweetup’ Robby Slaughter, President of Slaughter Development spoke about making communication productive through the use of social media sites such as: Facebook, Twitter, Flowtown and many more. Social Media Strategist and promoter of NWI Tweetup, Dave Woodson was also in attendance to answer any questions that anyone may have had.
“Social media is not technology, it is the alarming propensity of connection between human beings,” Slaughter said. Slaugther ended the evening by inviting everyone to mingle and get to know one another.

PSC is active in business networking in Northwest Indiana and will be speaking at the Southshore Networking Meeting on Tuesday Oct. 5 at 8 a.m. at Cafe’ Devine located at 9000 Taft St. in Merrillville. This event is open to the public.
“Everyone at PSC is involved with networking as much as we can be. Being able to speak and atend events such as the ‘tweetup’ helps us to be up-to-date and involved with every aspect of the business world,” Jimenez said.

The NWI Tweetup meets once a month and will be meeting in October at Crown Point Brewery. For more information on NWI Tweetup, visit
