If you thought you knew the story of “The Princess and The Pea,” you may be in for a surprise. Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that Lady Larken’s love for Sir Harry provided a rather compelling reason that she reach the bridal altar post haste? Or that, in fact, it was not the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night?
Carried on a wave of songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you will never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.
For ìOnce Upon a Mattress,î Memorial Opera House is looking to cast six men and four women, plus 12-15 ensemble members, some with singing and speaking lines. Those auditioning should bring 16-32 bars of a relevant musical theatre selection in their key. Accompanist will be provided. There will also be a dance audition, cold reading and some will be asked to sing selections from the show.
ìOnce Upon a Mattressî performance dates are April 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 8 p.m., and April 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. Rehearsals will be Monday through Thursday nights at 7 p.m. from Feb. 21 through April 7.
