Mayor Velazquez receives Gold Award

Portage Mayor Olga Velazquez has been awarded a Gold Certificate as an Indiana City Leadership Ambassador from the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns (IACT) and the IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs (IU SPEA) Mayors Institute. To earn this status, over the past two years Velazquez has completed 10, courses geared exclusively towards the continuing education of Indiana’s municipal CEOs.

The Mayors Institute is a quarterly series that began in November 2008. Participants acquire practical tools for meeting real-life challenges as IU SPEA faculty, IACT staff, fellow mayors and guest speakers lead the group through advanced problem-solving exercises. The IACT and the executive education program at IU SPEA are proud to work with mayors from all around the state for the betterment of Indiana’s cities.

The IACT is a coalition of municipal officials who seek to improve the quality of life in Indiana through effective government, and is a member of the National League of Cities. Founded in 1891, the IACT is one of the oldest state municipal organizations in the country, with 470 cities and towns as members.

The IACT advocates for municipalities as the official voice of municipal government in Indiana, and promotes good government through education, training and leadership. For more information, visit www.citiesandtowns.org.

Chesterton High School student to participate in All-State Band Festival

Bradley Levi, senior clarinetist with the Chesterton High School band program directed by Michael Scheiber, has been selected to participate in the 51st Annual Indiana All-State High School Band Festival sponsored by the Indiana Bandmasters Association.

Each student earned this honor by participating in a highly competitive audition held early in January at nine centers across Indiana. Nearly 700 talented young musicians applied to audition. A selection committee then reviewed tape recordings from each center and selected 170 outstanding high school band members to participate in the 2011 Festival.

Dr. Jeffery Doebler, director of bands at Valparaiso University, will direct the 84 piece Indiana All-State Band. In addition to the regular Indiana All-State Band, there is a select Honor Band. Professor Jay Gephart, director of bands at Purdue University, will direct the 86 member Indiana All-State Honor Band.

All members will participate in a series of activities including seating auditions, sectionals and full rehearsals from Friday, March 11 through Sunday, March 13. A grand finale concert will be presented to the public on Sunday, March 13 at 2:30 p.m. in the Elliott Hall of Music on the Purdue University-West Lafayette campus.
