A crowd of more than 400 student artists, their families, Portage Township School Art Teachers and guests attended the Youth Art Month Opening Reception at the Portage Library.

“The library has been displaying the PTS students’ art for years. I began as the branch head in June and wondered why we didn’t have an opening reception for the students like we do for the Senior Art Exhibit,” Anne M.G. Wood said. “So I contacted Bridget Nadolski, Myers art instructor, about getting this together and she was very excited. She worked with all the PTS art teachers to coordinate the event and was responsible for the donations.”

Donations by Portage Tri-Kappa, Portage Kiwanis and Miller’s Assisted Living of Portage allowed attendees to enjoy cookies and punch as they viewed art work by more than 200 Portage Township students. Moody Blooms provided a whimsical centerpiece and Cindy Laingren, secretary to the schools superintendent, assembled corsages for the art teachers.

Victoria Borinovski, a third-grader at Myers Elementary said, “I was really excited to have my art work at the library. My family liked it and thought it was great beautiful. I liked having it at the library because a bunch of people will see my art.”

Bethany Majewski, a second-grader at Myers agreed, “I liked the art about giraffes and different things. My mom, dad, and aunt thought my art was creative!”

Paintings, drawings and other multi-media pieces were on display in the Youth Services Department, located at 2665 Irving St. in Portage, and display cases throughout the month.

“We were thrilled with the turn out; students brought their whole families, sometimes grandma and grandpa too,” Wood said.

“Mrs. Nadolski invited Mayor Olga Velasquez and Michael Berta, superintendent of Portage Township Schools, who both attended. The library and PTS teachers would like to make this an annual event as this is a wonderful opportunity for both students and teachers to be recognized for their hard work and talent.”
