Here’s how NIPSCO’s new electric rate case helps customers.

Last November, we filed a new electric rate case with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. This filing includes updated cost and usage data that better reflects today’s economy. If approved, these new rates will ease the burden on residential customers while allowing us to continue investing in service, reliability and system improvements to support Indiana’s economic growth.

A smaller bill increase

Under the new proposal, average residential bills would increase by $5.94 per month, or 7.9 percent over what customers currently pay. This is about half the amount authorized in our last rate case. Keep in mind, the increase from our last rate case has not been applied to bills, and we filed a request with the IURC to vacate the procedural schedule for the last case in order to focus on resolving the second case instead.

Improved customer service and reliability

These new rates will help us continue to improve customer service and make investments in system reliability and environmental technology – such as our recent $330 million purchase of the highly efficient Sugar Creek natural gas-fired power plant in West Terre Haute.

The new rates also will support our efficiency programs that help customers save energy and manage their household budget. We were the third most improved utility in the country for customer satisfaction in the most recent JD Power electric survey, and we had the fewest complaints by any utility in Indiana in 2010. However, we recognize there is still much work left and we are intently focused on improving the level of service to our customers.

Competitive commercial and industrial rates

Average rates for most commercial and industrial customers would also increase by about 8 percent per month when compared with current bills. We also are offering more service options that commercial and industrial customers have asked for to help them manage energy costs. The impact on individual commercial and industrial customers will vary based upon usage patterns.

Power for Northern Indiana’s future

To create jobs and grow our economy, northern Indiana needs modern, reliable, affordable energy. We expect our new rates to remain competitive nationally and with surrounding states. Northern Indiana is a great place to live and do business, and we are working to keep it that way.
