Here’s the scoop – Never touch dog poop again

Yard Doodles. Even saying the words is funny, but it is the true name of Charles Lewis’ company.
With the amusing motto of “Your pet’s business is our business,” the pet waste removal service opened in April of 2009. It is a local family-owned and operated company specializing in professional, personal service. Its mission is to keep your property doodle free for the health of your pet and your family, while protecting the environment against contamination.
Lewis “stepped” into the entrepreneurial opportunity when his mother broke her hip and was unable to take their family dog out. So Lewis would swing by and take care of business.
“That is when the light bulb went off. I thought this could be beneficial to a variety of people. I began my research and found that there were many successful businesses operating a pooper scooper business,” he said.
Education is a key component in getting new business, since the service provides more than just a convenience for its customers who are thrilled about not having to handle a dog’s daily deposits of doodoo. A pile of doodle can take a year or more to fully breakdown and besides maintaining a clean, healthy lawn appearance, there are environmental reasons to scoop your dog’s poop.
That’s why Lewis provides clients with an education about the dangers of pet waste: You should not use it as a fertilizer or just let is dissolve in your yard. Articles published by the Environmental Protection Agency show that pet waste is a major contaminate to our ground water. Pet waste also harbors parasites and diseases. When left in the yard it has the potential to spread on to humans and your pets.
Yard Doodles offers a variety of one-time, weekly and twice-weekly rates. So far, Yard Doodles serves La Porte, Westville, Valparaiso, Chesterton, Beverly Shores, Ogden Dunes, Dune Acres, Long Beach, Michigan City, New Carlisle, and New Buffalo, Mich.

Canine Country Club offers it all for canines

Canine Country Club, Porter County’s first off-leash dog park, opened in November 2002. Teri and Bob Gray, life-long Valparaiso residents, got the idea after visiting the Broadripple dog park in Indianapolis. Teri and Bob converted a 5-acre farm field by planting grass and trees and surrounding it with a 6-foot fence.

The park has separate areas for small and large dogs, as well as a gazebo, porch and benches for people. Also at the Canine Country Club is the “Clubhouse,” a large insulated building for popular dog training classes specializing in things such as obedience, agility and tricks, which are offered year-round regardless of the weather. Valparaiso Kennel club holds its dog training classes there on Wednesdays.

Memberships to Canine Country Club are available for terms of one month to one year. Day passes are available during office hours. All dogs are required to pre-register, and must provide proof of vaccinations. All owners are required to read and agree to the rules of the park. Members may visit the park any time from 7 a.m. until dusk, six days a week (closed Mondays), 52 weeks a year.

Bring your dogs and come sniff around at Canine Country Club, located at 3556 Sturdy Road in Valparaiso, for a dog-gone good time. For more information, call 219-548-3604, or visit

Kovenz Memorial

1. Kovenz Memorial opened its doors in 1937 in La Porte, IN under the vision of Jake Kovenz. A Hungarian immigrant who came to this country with the skills he learned to help families through a difficult time by remembering and memorializing their loved ones. Our main focus has always been engraving and personalizing headstones. Since then we have diversified our products for many different uses. We now offer granite signs, name plates, garden statues and birdbaths, coffee tables and dining room tables with granite tops, and much more! The sky is the limit when it comes to designing and personalizing a memorial for your loved ones and beloved pets

2. We opened our doors in Valparaiso in January of 2010.  We now have three locations, one in La Porte, one in Michigan City under the name Michigan City Monuments, and now in Valparaiso. We have been wanting to expand our customer base and start working with families in Porter and Lake County. Since the Valparaiso area doesn’t have a business completely devoted to crafting memorials we thought it would be a great place to set up shop. Our Valparaiso location is located at 2404 Roosevelt Rd just south of the Vale Park/Calumet/Roosevelt intersection across the street from Brown Tire.

3. Our business practice is that monuments are our business…not a sideline. We work with the customer one on one to get a one of a kind memorial, duplicate an existing monument to match a family members, and everything and anything you can think of. We offer hundreds of colors and design options that folks can choose from. We have created memorials that are shaped like motorcycles and have a design etched on them that looks very realistic, or even fully sculpted angels and other statues. The possibilities are endless.

If you can dream it…we can make it!

4. Our source of inspiration is the families that come in and talk with us. We hear about some pretty great people that served their communities, their countries, or were truly the epitome of what it is to be a loving husband, wife, daughter, or son. Just talking with the families about what their passions are helps to put a personal touch on a stone we make. A life-like portrait etched onto the face of the stone, an emblem of a favorite sports team, or the insignia worn on their uniform when they served in the armed forces. It really helps to convey the love they had for their family, what they were proud of, and the lives they touched before they left this world.

5. Our goals for our business have been met and exceeded. To be a company that cares about its customers and offer competitive pricing when it comes to placing a memorial in a cemetery. We can get a stone made and sent to any cemetery in the nation and we have expanded our online presence to help families from California, Texas, or New Jersey purchase and design a stone with us to be placed in a local cemetery. We hope to keep expanding our reach by getting a solid customer base not just in Lake, Porter, and La Porte County, but serve more customers in Northeast Illinois and Southwest Michigan as we often do now.
