When the heat is on, here’s where to cool off

The city of Valparaiso has partnered with a number of community organizations to offer cooling centers to help keep the city safe during this week’s heat wave. “We encourage people to visit these cooling centers and to check on those who may not have functioning air conditioning,” said Mayor Jon Costas. open this week and during future heat waves:

Valparaiso University, Harre Union, 1509 Chapel Dr., open Monday – Saturday from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information call 219-464-5000.

Valparaiso YMCA, 1202 Cumberland Crossing, open weekdays from 5 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday from 7 a.m. – 6 p.m., and Sunday from 12:30 – 6 p.m.. For more information call 219-462-4185.

Porter County Public Library, Valparaiso branch, 103 Jefferson St., open Monday – Thursday from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m., Friday from 9.m. – 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information call 219-462-0524.

Vale Park Enrichment at Banta, 605 Beech St., open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. For more information call 219-462-1301.

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church, 1511 LaPorte Ave., open every day from 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. For more information call 219-464-4042.

In addition, the Valparaiso Police Department offers a special program for individuals who may need special help during weather emergencies, including times when the heat index exceeds 100 degrees for consecutive days. The Contact Assistance Referral (CARE) Program has Valparaiso Police Department personnel checking on residents during harsh weather. To register for CARE, call Sgt.
